I’ve wasted the day away with my nose mostly in a book
I have somehow spent much of the day reading Old Man’s War by John Scalzi. It’s really very good, and a fun take on the old “going off to war” sci-fi story. So it’s kind of like Heinlein’s Starship Troopers, but with old people. I will likely finish this book tonight or tomorrow, and I started reading it about two days ago.
I’ll contrast this with the last book I read which was Me and the Devil by Nick Tosches. That book took me over a month to read. I would grab bits and pieces here and there, but I could never get into it enough to sit for hours with it.
Nick Tosches writes with a much more beautiful style of prose than John Scalzi does – just read each of them and this is plain to see. But these two books show that it’s really interesting and compelling stories that keep people coming back for more, not necessarily the ability to form perfect sentences.
