In case you needed a reminder, drug prohibition doesn’t work

I just read this terrible story about the murder of Maria Santos Gorrostieta – a former Mexican mayor who had already survived two previous attempts on her life. She was abducted in front of her daughter in broad daylight by a drug gang and then killed and eventually left to be found beaten, stabbed, and burned on the side of a road.

A quote from the article also claims that “From January to September last year, 12,903 people were killed in the country [Mexico] in drug-related crime, ranging from gang members, Mexican military and innocent victims caught up in gun battles.” I have to admit that I find this almost unbelievable.

It’s as if no one in power anywhere actually learned any of the lessons taught to us by the complete failure of Prohibition in the 1920’s…
