Long live the Beastie Boys
While this is likely no longer breaking news on the internet, I found out earlier today that Adam Yauch, a.k.a. MCA, of the Beastie Boys has died after a battle with cancer. Some of my fondest memories of the 90’s involved doing stupid things while playing Ill Communication at a high volume; and I credit the Beastie Boys (perhaps rather oddly for a suburban white kid) with helping to expand my musical tastes beyond the groovy hip-hop of the early 90’s and into many other genres.
MCA, Ad-Rock, and Mike D showed me time and again that the only thing that matters about the music you listen to is the pleasure you get out of it. And there are very few people who could make music as fun as those three guys who got their start in the New York City punk scene of the late 70’s and finished over 30 years later among the greatest bands ever.
Here’s an obligatory link to a kick-ass music video… RIP MCA.
And by the way, there’s never been a better time to donate to the American Cancer Society. Just sayin…
