Louis CK has convinced me that I probably don’t really need cable any more
A few weeks ago, I purchased a comedy special that Louis CK has graciously offered online for $5. It was very, very funny; and it was certainly worth the $5. I suggest that you buy it as well. It’s really easy to download, and if you have even the slightest technical know-how you can easily burn it to a DVD (or just transfer the file straight to you PS3 like I did) to watch on your television in all its glory. It was just like watching one of his HBO specials on cable. Which, along with some other things, got us thinking. Why do we even still need cable?
The short answer, it turns out, is that we probably don’t. And thus begins the great debate. Are there really any compelling reasons to pay for cable television – 99% of which we will literally never watch – when there are now so many other home entertainment options that can be had for less money? We have been hard pressed to think of any beyond baseball and Game of Thrones/Boardwalk Empire. But there are ways to get around even these things (legally, mind you) if we wanted to make the effort.
I have Netflix, and can get Hulu Plus easily. In fact, after watching Louis CK’s special, I decided to start watching his show as well, which is currently on Netflix. I really haven’t even watched any cable in the last week, and I barely noticed. So once an Apple TV box gets thrown into the mix, there is nothing I would need to see on cable that I can’t get some other way. In the end, it’s probably going to amount to close to $1,000 a year savings for us if we do this. How can we pass that up? $1,000 gets us a few trips to New York to go and see some Yankee baseball. I think it’s time to cut the cord…
