If you like sentences, you should read this book

January 3, 2012

I have little to report today, though I do have a recommendation. If you enjoy either reading or writing (or, like me, both of these things) you should pick up and read a small book called How to Write a Sentence: And How to Read One by Stanley Fish. It’s a wonderful little treatise on the art and craft of sentences.

I will warn you that the title is slightly misleading. It isn’t a book on “how to write” in the classical sense. There are a few simple exercises that serve to illustrate his idea of what a good sentence is, but the remainder of the book is not much more than Fish showing examples of great sentences and how they serve the craft of writing (and the joy of reading).

It very much appealed to the grammar snob in me, and so it shall for others too.
