Now begins my long countdown to the time of the year when it doesn’t snow anymore

October 29, 2011

It’s supposed to snow today here in upstate New York, and I’m not at all happy about that. It snowed a little the other day, and I know a lot of people were excited about it being the first snow and all. I, however, understand that the first snow is simply a sign that many more months of snow are now coming to ruin our travel and leisure.

No one gets excited about the 17th snow of the season, so why should we be excited about the first or second? All it means to me is crappy roads, bad business, and flooded rivers in the spring. I don’t ski or snowboard, so there’s really not much for me to do outside. And baseball’s been over for me for weeks (though I did hear something about a World Series win by the Cardinals), so there’s no sports to watch (I’m not a football guy). This is a long, dark period in my year.

All I’m left with is some very good television (Boardwalk Empire, The Walking Dead, and a new show called American Horror Story), and my writing. Of course, maybe that’s a good thing. I can use my snow inspired angst as inspiration or something; or, at the very least, I’ll be forced to stay inside and actually do some work. Fair enough, mother nature, you win this round…
