I’m sick on the couch and watching The Wonder Years

The Wonder Years

I am sick today. Because of this, I’ve been laying on the couch doing my best to avoid working on anything at all. I’ve read for a while, played a little Dragon Age, and then went on to Netflix to find a time waster.

There I found, much to my surprise, that every episode of The Wonder Years is now available as streaming content. I am extraordinarily excited about this, and not sure how I missed it before. This was one of my favorite shows growing up. I was 9 or 10 when it first aired, which put me about 3 years younger than Kevin Arnold and his friends when the series began. Though that didn’t mean that I wasn’t completely captivated by Winnie Cooper just like every other boy my age at the time.

I’ve probably seen the whole series multiple times through, as it was in syndication for most of the 90’s. And I imagine that many of my memories of the show are from that time rather that the original airings. But I still remember how well it captured for me the concerns of a suburban adolescent growing up and coming of age. Concerns that I sometimes wonder if current suburban teens would even understand anymore. They seem these days more like college kids by the time they’re 14 years old (fuck you, MTV).

So here I sit, now 5 episodes into the series again and I have to say that I find it just as wonderful this go around as I did the first time, though likely for different reasons. It’s still funny and heartwarming, and at times even thought provoking. I now know what I’ll be doing the rest of today, at least until my medicine finally knocks me out.
