Damn you, George R.R. Martin!

May 18, 2011

I had the day off from my real job today, and I had some very big plans. I was fully prepared to get a lot of writing done. Instead I got basically nothing done. Do you know why? Well I’ll tell you. It’s because I can not put down this damn epic fantasy series by one Mr. George R.R. Martin. A Song of Ice and Fire is the name of it (for those who don’t already know), and it is utterly amazing.

I’ve never been a huge reader of what you would call “epic” fantasy. Sure I loved The Lord of the Rings, and there’s a series of books by Tad Williams called Memory, Sorrow, & Thorn which I also really enjoyed. And, of course, earlier this year I wrote about Patrick Rothfuss and his Kingkiller Chronicles. Ok, so maybe I read a little more of it than I though; but I guess that’s not really the point. The point is that George R.R. Martin is destroying all my motivation to do anything except read his books.

Now, I know that this is not really his fault. It’s not like he owes my anything. I still think he should be ashamed of himself though for being such a good writer. It’s not fair really. I have things to do and Martin has put out books that have caused me to put my entire life outside of work on hold for these past few weeks. Oh, and on top of that I’ve been forced to watched the HBO show Game of Thrones which is based on the first book of Martin’s series and is also amazing. It’s ridiculous.

George R.R. Martin may not be my bitch (thanks a lot, Neil Gaiman), but he certainly is the bane of my productive efforts these days – and dammit don’t I love him for it.

You’re lucky. Most of us finished what he has written years ago and have been waiting (with our hearts in our teeth) for him to write some more of his violent addictive prose.

With any luck I’ll be finished with A Feast for Crows by the end of today. They’re all so good, but I need a break…
