Some thoughts on the TSA

November 17, 2010

There’s been a lot of talk recently about the invasiveness of the Transportation Security Administrations’s new screening procedures for citizens who wish to board airplanes. Here are some random thoughts I have about it.

  • First, it’s the TSA’s job to screen all passengers who want to fly in the US, so I understand why they feel that this is necessary; however…
  • It wouldn’t be necessary if the TSA wasn’t so fucking lazy that they feel the need to treat everyone as a suspect instead of actually doing some work to find out beforehand who might be suspicious.
  • The argument that the TSA has been a success because there haven’t been any more attacks since 9/11 is ridiculous. A little research online has given me an estimate that there are about 30,000 commercial airline flights on any given day in the US. That’s about 110,000,000 flights in the last ten years. And there’s been one successful attack and maybe 4 or 5 serious attempts during that time. The odds of an attempted terror attack over that time span on a US flight are thus about 1/18,333,333. For perspective, the odds of being struck by lightning in just one given year are only 1/750,000 and of winning $200,000 in the Powerball lottery are 1/5,138,133.
  • In conclusion, fuck the TSA. I defy anyone to logically argue for this practice in light of the existence of the 4th Amendment. Even Glenn Beck thinks it’s insane, though I can’t say that his solution is really more rational…

What are your thoughts?

    Hmm…so you’re saying there’s a chance, eh?

Ha, of what? Dying in “terror” attack? Of course there is, but it’s not as great a chance of dying, say, tomorrow in a car accident. Or someday of heart disease (which many Americans are virtually guaranteed of considering their diets), I digress…

I read the post on your site though and enjoyed it, and thanks for the comment on my random musings of the moment.

Sorry, it’s a line from [embarresment] “dumb and dumber.” After she says that he’s got about a chance in a billion in getting together with her, Harry shouts “So you’re saying there’s a chance!”

In this case, Harry would be the TSA. It was a bit of sarcasm, I guess, about the odds of getting killed by a terrorist. Great, and pointed, thoughts. I’ve added your blog to my reader.

Don’t be embarrassed, I’ve seen that movie more than once. It’s one of those that for some reason I can’t help but sit and watch if it’s on TV. Anyhow, I’ve added yours to my reader as well. Keep up the good work, and thanks again.
